A piece of land, a great tree and a life built differently

Apothefinca is a five-acre off-grid farm in southern Nicaragua, created by writer Lucy Lowes Paget.

Its name comes from apothecary and finca — a farm — reflecting Lucy's early fascination with growing food, herbs and useful plants from the land.

But Apothefinca became something neither planned nor easily named. It became home.

At the centre of the farm stands an enormous Guanacaste tree. The Home Tree.

Lucy built her home beneath its branches and, over the years, the tree became a place to write, think, listen, gather and begin again.

It eventually gave its name to her memoir, The Home Tree.

Today Apothefinca remains a working, evolving home and farm — gardens, fruit trees, bees, birds, animals and people living alongside one another.

It is also a place where people come to make things.

Writers and artists stay here. Creative retreats gather beneath the Home Tree. Guests come simply to experience a quieter, wilder way of living for a while.
